The best ad networks for news sites — a completely different list

News publishers have the strongest sites in our entire index and the least overlap with mainstream blogging advice. The networks that lead this category are ones most blogging guides never mention.

1 August 2026 · 6 min read

We index 1,710 news & politics sites carrying at least one identifiable ad network, at a median authority of 42.

That median authority of 42 is the highest of any major category we track — news sites accumulate links as a by-product of being cited, which puts them in a different band from lifestyle publishers of the same traffic.

Why news sits outside the blogging networks

Brand safety is the short answer. Large advertisers apply keyword and category blocks that exclude hard news, and politics especially — a publisher can have excellent traffic and still find the premium demand pool closed to it. Networks built around lifestyle inventory are selling into exactly the budgets that apply those blocks, so news is a poor fit for their sales motion regardless of a site’s quality.

The publishing shape differs too. News is high-volume, low-dwell and extremely peaky: a single story can multiply a day’s traffic. That rewards partners who can absorb spikes and monetise shallow sessions, which is a different competence from maximising revenue on a long recipe page.

The networks that lead here have built for that: broad exchange demand, tolerance for volatile inventory, and less dependence on the brand budgets that shy away from news.

What this means if you run a news site

Do not read the standard advice as applying to you. The traffic minimums quoted by lifestyle networks are not the bar you need to clear, because those networks are not really competing for your inventory in the first place. The realistic shortlist is the table above.

Two practical notes. First, your authority is probably higher than your traffic suggests, which helps with partners who evaluate on quality signals. Second, category matters within news — local news, trade press and general-interest aggregation are three different products to an advertiser, and the networks above are not equally strong at all three.

Brand safety, and how much of it is self-inflicted

Advertisers block news through keyword lists, and those lists are blunt instruments. A recipe site mentioning a knife is fine; a news site reporting on a knife crime is excluded, and so, frequently, is the entire domain that ran the story. The mechanism does not distinguish between a publisher covering a difficult subject responsibly and one trading on it.

The consequence for a publisher is that the same audience is worth materially less on a news site than on a lifestyle site, before anyone negotiates anything. It is also why the networks that lead this category are ones with broad exchange demand rather than ones built on direct brand relationships — they are selling into the pool that has not applied the block.

Local, trade and general news are three different products

Local news carries the strongest case with advertisers because the audience is geographically defined and therefore targetable — but the volumes are small and the national demand pool mostly ignores it. Trade and B2B press has the most valuable audience per head of any news category and the shallowest supply of programmatic demand for it, which is why so much of it is sold directly or sits behind a subscription. General-interest news has the volume and the worst brand-safety exposure.

The networks in the table above are not equally suited to all three, and a publisher in the first two categories should treat direct sales and subscriptions as part of the answer rather than assuming display alone will carry the site.

Questions news publishers ask

Why will premium ad networks not take news sites?

Mostly brand safety rather than quality. Large advertisers apply category and keyword blocks that exclude hard news and politics, so a network selling into brand budgets cannot monetise news inventory well however good the site is. That is a mismatch between the network's sales motion and your content, not a judgement on your publication.

Which ad networks work best for news sites?

In our index, PubGalaxy (240 live news sites), Publift (230) and the others in the table above. These are networks with broad exchange demand rather than networks built on direct brand relationships, which is precisely why they can monetise inventory the brand-safety blocks exclude.

Do news sites earn less than blogs from the same traffic?

Usually yes, per impression. Sessions are shallower, a large share of traffic arrives for a single story and leaves, and the brand-safety blocks remove some of the highest-paying demand. News sites compensate with volume and with revenue outside display — subscriptions, memberships and direct sales are a larger part of the mix here than in any other category.

Does high authority help a news site get accepted?

It helps with any partner that assesses quality signals, and news sites tend to have plenty of it — this is the highest-authority category we index, with a median of 42, because being cited generates links as a by-product. But authority does not overcome a brand-safety mismatch, which is why strong news sites are still absent from the premium lifestyle networks.
